How to Practice Gratitude Everyday?

How to Practice Gratitude Everyday?

I come from small family. It is just my mom, dad, and myself.  We use to hang a lot with my extended family on my dad’s side. We use to have a big family gathering over my aunt and uncle’s home. Playing with my cousins was always the highlight of  the holidays for me. It was always a tradition to say what you were thankful for on Thanksgiving and then would proceed with gracing the food.  Over the course of time things change, cousins get older, they have family of their home, and then you have some family members that hold grudges.  For the past few years it has just been my mom, dad, and myself. My dad is not the most social person, usually Thanksgiving is just my mom and myself.  My daddy is pretty content with is solitude. So you can find me helping my mom peel the potatoes, and mixing up the sweet potatoes batter for the pies. Soon after you find us reminiscing on how things use to me be back when I was small. Laughing at the past or talking about movies we seen over and over again. We always lead back to how I use play with my cousins. How we all use to be.  All the loud noises of laughter and glee.

I really down thinking about how things use to be. It is not the same feeling I use to have as kid. I miss how my family use to be. Now it seems like just another day.  When I am feeling sad, especially about my family, I remember to practice gratitude during the tough times. I find myself being appreciative of what I do have. I have both of my parents and even.  Gratitude is something that can be practice everyday not just on Thanksgiving.  This practice alone packs a lot if benefit and can improve your overall wellness.

First of all gratitude is simply the quality of being thankful, and having appreciation for something. Instead of showing your appreciation and gratefulness during the holiday, express it everyday. We all having something to be thankful for.   Here is a few ways on how to practice gratitude.

  • Gratitude journal: Write down the things you are thankful for. It helps seeing your positive thoughts on paper. You can always go back and look at you positive thoughts. I write down all the things I grateful for the day each day. It forces me to be present.
  • Appreciate everything big & small: Be thankful for everything. Don’t just show out for big things. Appreciate those small things too. It could be something as simple as appreciate the sunny weather outside. When practicing gratitude you don’t want to leave out anything out.
  • Practice gratitude in negative times: Gratitude is not only for positive experiences. Thinking and going through difficult times can really help with putting thing into perspective. It can really open you eyes to what you have to be thankful for.
  • Volunteer: Helping others can always make you feel good.

The benefits of practicing gratitude can improve your overall happiness. It also improves self esteem and it helps with empathy. Gratitude helps us all realize and appreciate what we already have. We get to see our situation in a different light.  This quote below, in my opinion, describes the benefits of practicing gratitude:

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptances, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

-melody beattie

In conclusion to my story above I learn to appreciate what I already have. My family situation might be a bit off right now but gratitude helps me appreciate my little family. Any chance I get I try to spend my time with my mom and dad. They are all  I have and I love them dearly. When you think about it, time is not on our parents side. So I cherish all my moments that I have with them. Ultimately, practicing gratitude helps me understand that my situation is not that bad. I get to hang with my mom. I talk and learn from her. I get to crack jokes with my dad. I am truly content !

Casual Thanksgiving Outfit from Ferne Boutique

Casual Thanksgiving Outfit from Ferne Boutique

Hey y’all, how was your weekend? I know for me I had a blast with my mom. My mom and I went to Campus Martius in Downtown Detroit this weekend to take a look at the Christmas tree. Around this time of year the heart of Detroit is lit by big ole evergreen tree from up north. The tree, in my opinion, is more beautiful then the year before. After the tree we took pictures, drank hot cocoa, played card games and went up and down Woodward and shopped down. THATS WHAT WE DO! We love to have fun. Anyway, speaking of the Christmas tree, it always puts me in the holiday day mood each time. Can you believe it, Thanksgiving is on the cusp. Time really flies when your having a good time. I am so ready for all the good food. (I got beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes…. YOU NAME IT !) Lol I had too. Do you know what you are wearing for Thanksgiving?. With all the food and indulging more and more I like to keep my outfit simple, casual, and COMFORTABLE. I need all the room for my stomach . LOL In this post I will be showing off a chunky knit sweater that I believe is the comfort and cute approach to the holidays.

FashionLayn’s Outfit Deets…..

So a week ago I found myself at Ferne Boutique for an event with Femology. It was a networking event that turn into a shopping extravaganza. Ferne Boutique is a women own business that provides ladies with contemporary clothing and accessories.  Laura, owner of Ferne, is living her dream. Before I go any further, Ferne is plus size friendly y’all. They have a really nice quality collection online too.  While I was there my eye was caught by a mustard color sweater.  Mustard is my favorite color for the fall and winter. It was calling my name …LITERALLY . Before I knew it I was striking poses and voguing in the mirror with the sweater. I think I looked at this sweater 5 times and finally I caved in.

This sweater can be describes as a mustard color sweater with a distressed hem and cable knit stitching style. I am living so much for this sweater because this is exactly what I am looking for when I say comfortable.  It is soft, chunky, warm and over sized one size fit kinda of sweater. I have to say what really pulled me in was the distressed hem and crop like style.  What I really loved the most is that it can easily hide my stomach after I had my extra helping of dressing. LOL  To keep this outfit on the comfortable size I paired the sweater with a stretchy pair of thick black leggings for movement. Lastly to finish off the look I added  my triple buckle ankle boots (my favs), silver/gun metal accent earrings, and pair of yellow tinted sunglasses with black rim.   Little sidenote: If you want to turn up the heat on this look, instead of basic leggings… add a faux leather leggings and nice heel  to top it off.

For this sweater it ran me $54 dollars. Everything else that was added to bring this outfit together, came from my closest.  I do think the sweater is a bit pricey side.  I prefer to spend $54 dollars on complete look. HOWEVER, I do not mind spending money on quality clothing. I mention before on previous blog post that it is okay to splurge on quality clothing that you know it going to last and timeless. That is just my opinion.

Ferne Boutique was giving me all the tea on the latest contemporary  fall /winter styles. If you find yourself in Detroit or Bay City, MI do not hesitate to stop by the store.  Say HI to Laura and her staff. Have fun ! The different pieces in the store are amazing. Also, if you can’t make it to Michigan, thats okay- you can always do a little online shopping !

Lavender Shaggy Faux Fur Coat from Forever21

Lavender Shaggy Faux Fur Coat from Forever21

Omg I have been away from the blog for like whole week! AHHH  I am back and I am NOT suffering from writers block anymore. So lets get back on the fashion train.  Before I do that , let me tell you a bit about my weekend. I found myself networking and shopping at Ferne Boutique with Femology. You can find this store in the New Center area in Detroit ! Omg this boutique is now my new favorite store….but let me save all the details. I had a great time at the event! I got a chance to  meet the owner, hanging out, and SHOP! I can’t wait to show sis all the pieces I bought!

Lets get into this outfit sis ! This by far one of my all time favorite looks!  Wanna know a secret….. come close…  I did not plan to where to this at all. I came up with this outfit 30 minutes before the event.  LOL!

FashionLayn Outfit Deets….

I was so excited to wear this Shaggy faux fur Coat in the color Lavender. This was the statement piece of the year  ! I was giving you fall flavor with hint of  lavender unicorn glam. I was gifted this item from Forever21 after collaborating with them. When I tried on this jacket I had to have it ! This faux fur coat features a hood, open front,  and patch pockets.  I tried on a size large.  It did , in my opinion, run big enough for me. So keep that in mine when you are looking at this type of coat.. (sidenote: below I linked a bigger size for my more curvier women) DSC00904

Faux Fur and the teddy bear faux fur effect are on trend for the fall. I feel like for trendy looks you should not pay top knot dollar. Keep that mind . Do you really want to invest all your coins into something that is only going to be in style for season? With that being said this faux fur cost $43 at Forever 21.

So in order to compliment the jacket I wore a  mustard ribbed jersey top from H&M. To finish the look I added a  mustard color bucket bag, black legging with my over the knee boots. Its a look ! Done !  Oops almost forgot. I tied a cute little color block scarf  to help tied all the colors together!

So yes I decided to be daring and play with colors.  It paid off sis I got so many compliments on the coat and the colors.  It was Eye Catching ! Popping ! Fun! Had so much fun with your looks ! Don’t be afraid to bring bright or bold colors to your wardrobe! Have Fun !

Entrepreneurial Tips From A Female Millionaire and more

Entrepreneurial Tips From A Female Millionaire and more

Event Recap: Female Millionaire Detroit

Connecting Female Entrepreneurs with Real Women Millionaire

On Sunday evening I attended an event called Female Millionaire created by Femology Detroit.  Femology had this cool idea to link entrepreneurs, business owners to a 3 women who were killing the game from all angles.

femaleFemology Detroit is a modern day work space design for women. They are all about created an environment for women to collaborate and empower !

So again, Femology had an idea to connect a female millionaire, along with others to share the ends and outs of entrepreneurship to women like me who are just getting started.  I can really say that a fire was lit inside of me to think of creative ways to build my brand, and create a product that founded off of my principles as a blogger.  Ever since I was younger I always wanted to own my own business. I want to be my own boss so it was only right to be present at this event. Get a early start on building the foundation to creating a service or product to offer. With all that being said let me spill the tea.

Below I am going share each panelist and list the best entrepreneurial tips they provided.

DSC00850

First panelist was Laura Horworth, Owner of Ferne Boutique, provides contemporary clothing and accessories at an affordable price in Detroit and Bay City, Michigan. She express some of the pros and cons she experience as a business owner of 2 stores.

  • Timing Is Everything
  • Stay Relevant. Always be wiling to learn
  • Understand how to deal with failure: She says wine (lol jk) and  positive affirmations help overcome her failures
  • Remember to be you and do it the best that you can.
  • Create a business plan, and don’t be afraid to speak to consultant
  • Secret Sauce: What set you apart from others?

DSC00857

Next we have Alexa Williams, the Creator/CEO of Glamorous Planning. She turn her passion for organization and design a straight forward 17 month planner that promotes organization in every women life.

  • Save up your own money: She saved  up her own money (capital) to help launch her planner
  • “Invest Money To Make Money” this is major key
  • Move at your own pace : There is no race to start up a business. Timing is everything !

Special Guest was Farah Merhi, Founder and Designer of Inspire Me Home Decor.  Her back story, she was 3 semester from graduating with a degree in political science. She decided instead of finish her degree she was going to go for passion. First she had to figure out what that was…. self discovery phase.  With the help of her family and others she realized that interior design was her calling, her passion. She created Inspire Me Home Decor. She want she was passionate about into career and got a bag(check).  Farah  was so inspirational and down to earth. She spoke from her heart and gave us all gems we can take with use to jump start our entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Have a team – Understand has a entrepreneur we can spread ourselves way to thin. It is okay to have a team to help
  • Self care is important because you can easily can become unmotivated if you are not taking care of yourself first
  • Innovative thinker- Find ways to keep elevating your business, don’t get complacent
  • Stay true to who you are
  • Be consistent
  • Follow Up

Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.

I have to be honest I was looking for an outfit at the last minute for this event.  Of course my money was a bit limited so I had to rely on what I already had in my closet.  Shopping you closet in my opinion is an excellent way to save money.  I wanted to pair these cute gingham ankle pants with a bold color sweater. I wanted to go for a red sweater but I found a this  cable knit mustard sweater instead.  This sweater cost $25 bucks!
